God vs. LGBT

Who doesn’t love a good controversy? Everyone loves some controversy every now and then. There have been so many topics that have had people around the world battling in the news, on social media, and in public. One of the most recent topics is the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage. This decision has the whole world divided into 3 groups:

  1. The LGBT Community - Celebrating recent decision of courts

  2. Christians - Condemning the LGBT community to Hell

  3. The Unconcerned - Those who don't care either way

Now this is a touchy subject and people have so many opinions. Let’s start with what the Bible says. There are 3 scriptures that tie in perfectly with this dilemma. The first scripture is the most important. It comes from John 8:7 which says “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”. This means that although homosexuality is a sin, everyone is sinning in some way so no one should be condemning anyone. You can’t call them out just because you think that their sin is greater than yours.

Proof in the Bible that homosexuality is a sin can be found in Leviticus 18:22 “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable” and 1 Corinthians 6:9 “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders”. So we know that it’s a sin and we know that we should not be in someone else's personal business because we have sins of our own.

So now for those red-hot Christians who are on a rampage condemning the homosexuals. You have got to do better in your approach if you truly want to win people over to Christ. There are scriptures for you as well. Proverbs 10:12 says “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers all wrongs”. And 1 Peter 4:8 says “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins”. These scriptures tell us that we should be loving these people, not hating them and turning them even further away from Christ.

In the old school church they used to say “hate the sin, not the sinner”. Everyone is sinning and you must understand something; while you are still in your sin, you will not be receptive to everyone who tries to help you. You can want a crackhead to stop smoking crack all you want, and fuss at them, but that won't make them change. All Christians should show the love of Christ when trying to help others. If you aren’t sure that Jesus would be saying what you are saying, then you probably shouldn’t say it.

The moral of the story is this: you don’t have to support or accept what is going on, but it is happening whether you like it or not. Either way, make sure you have no skeletons and are living right before you try to judge. Nobody could tell you anything while you were in your “mess” and just because you’ve been delivered doesn’t give you the right to act “holier than thou”. Show the love of Christ if you truly want to bring people closer to God.
